Sir (seit 1930) Richard Stafford, britischer Politiker, * London 24. 4. 1889, ✝ Zürich 21. 4. 1952; Rechtsanwalt, schloss sich der Labour Party an. 1931-50 war er Abgeordneter im Unterhaus. Als Sprecher der »Socialist League« innerhalb der Labour Party vertrat er radikale pazifistische und gesellschaftspolitische Forderungen; als Verfechter der Volksfrontidee wurde er 1939 aus der Labour Party ausgeschlossen (1945 wieder aufgenommen). Premierminister W. Churchill berief Cripps zum Botschafter in Moskau (Mai 1940 bis Januar 1942). Als Lordsiegelbewahrer und Führer des Unterhauses trat er 1942 in das Kriegskabinett ein. 1942-45 war er Minister für Flugzeugherstellung. Mit einer Indienmission (»Cripps' mission«, 1942) versuchte er vergeblich, die indische Nationalbewegung zur Zusammenarbeit mit Großbritannien im Krieg gegen Japan zu bewegen und eine Einigung über die künftige Verfassung des Subkontinents zu erreichen (Indien, Geschichte); 1946 nahm er an einer weiteren Indieninitiative (»Cabinet mission«) teil. In der von der Labour Party getragenen Regierung Attlee war Cripps 1945-47 Präsident des Handelsamtes, 1947-50 Schatzkanzler (Politik der Austerity).
